A Magical Realization

Once upon a time, in a quaint college town, there was a young student who had just completed her first semester of college. As she mopped the kitchen floors at her part-time job, a magical thought danced into her mind: Why was she spending her days flipping crepes when she could be teaching young dancers to spin with grace? With a spark of determination, she hurried home at the end of her shift and applied to every dance job within a 10-mile radius.

The very next morning, as if by enchantment, an email arrived inviting her to an interview that very evening. Her excitement bubbled over, and she prepared with all her heart. The interview was a resounding success, and she was asked to return the next day to teach a mock class and showcase her choreography.

With a fluttering heart, she performed with the elegance of a seasoned dancer, and by the end of the evaluation, the studio offered her the role of a competition coach. But there was a twist in her fairy tale: she was given the most challenging team. Undeterred, she accepted the challenge, ready to inspire and transform her young dancers, knowing that this was just the beginning of her magical journey.

Embracing the Challenge

This was the start of my career as a competition coach and despite the doubts of others, I was determined to transform my ragtag group of girls into budding stars. This wonderful group of girls were considered somewhat of rejects. They had been handed off from one coach to another, seeming to never grow and living in a stagnant routine, their potential untapped and their spirits dimmed. However, in my newfound role as their competition coach, I saw this as an opportunity to ignite their passion and help them flourish. I embarked on a journey to turn my team into a cohesive, dynamic group of dancers who would not only compete but also shine with newfound confidence and skill.

Overcoming Initial Hurdles

The start was rough. My dancers had become complacent and lacked motivation. I quickly discovered that their previous coach was very lax and struggled to set clear expectations. Promptly, I set to reverse this by defining my standards and setting goals with them, both individually and as a team. When performing difficult exercises, I offered encouragement and reminded them that the hard work they put in would make them the dancers they wanted to be. I told them that pushing themselves would open the door for growth and, in this journey of diligent effort, they would discover what they are truly capable of. Group motivation was particularly effective, creating a sense of camaraderie and responsibility towards one another.

Building a Strong Foundation

I spent significant amounts of time on basic technical skills that had been overlooked, resulting in their execution of other skills improving significantly. I followed my usual meticulous cleaning routine for their dances, leading to my reputation for having polished routines. This group began to shine at competitions, receiving top individual awards and placing for the first time. There was a fire in their eyes and excitement when they stepped into class. I would come into the dance studio to see them warming up and stretching on their own before class began. There was a complete change in them. They went from being the group at the bottom of the totem pole to dancers with abounding potential.

The Joy of Transformation

A huge motivating factor for why I teach is to see this development. I love to put all of my effort into dancers and help them to see the unrealized possibilities in themselves. I truly value my time with those dancers, and it forever changed how I viewed less advanced teams. Maybe it's not that they aren't good enough or have no promise. Maybe they just haven't had the right teacher or motivation. Either way, witnessing their transformation reaffirmed my belief that with dedication, encouragement, and the right guidance, any dancer can achieve greatness. This experience not only reinforced my teaching philosophy but also reminded me that every dancer has potential waiting to be unlocked. It’s up to us, as educators, to provide the key.
